Serie A 2022/2023, who qualifies for the Champions League? Rules on equal points and direct clashes

From Goal.com

What happens if two or more teams between Lazio, Inter, Milan, Rome, Atalanta and Juventus arrive on equal points? Who goes to the Champions League?

A few days before the end of the 22/23 Serie A championship and a tight fight for the Champions League. In addition to Napoli, which has made a vacuum behind it, three other teams will qualify for the top tournament.

But what happens if two or more teams finish level on points in fourth place? Who qualifies for the Champions League?

Let's see all the combinations for qualifying for the next Champions League.

EQUAL POINTS, WHO QUALIFIES?

The team that has obtained more points in the two head-to-head matches. If there are only two teams with equal points, this aspect is considered, otherwise, if there are three or more teams, the separate classification is used. What is it about? In a mini-ranking in which all the points in the direct clashes are added up in order to draw up the ranking for qualification in the Champions League. If two or more teams have obtained the same points, the other criteria are used, which can be used gradually in the event of a constant tie. Specifically, the regulation provides for the consideration of:

  • Points in direct matches

  • Goal difference in direct matches

  • General goal difference

  • Networks made in general

  • Draw

EQUAL POINTS, THE DIRECT CLASHES

  • Inter and Milan level on points - Since they are tied for head-to-head matches and goal difference in head-to-head matches, only after the 38th round will the better team be known, determined by virtue of the overall goal difference in Serie A (currently ahead of Inter )

  • Inter and Roma level on points - Giallorossi win 2-1 in the first leg, second leg to be played on 7 May

  • Inter and Atalanta level on points - Inter won 3-2 in the first leg, second leg to be played on 18 May

  • Roma and Atalanta level on points - Nerazzurri win 1-0 in the first leg, second leg to be played on 24 April

  • Roma and Juventus level on points - Roma in the Champions League (1-0 and 1-1)

  • Roma and Lazio level on points - Lazio in the Champions League (1-0 and 1-0)

  • Atalanta and Juventus level on points - tied 3-3 in the first leg, second leg to be played on 7 May

  • Atalanta and Lazio level on points - Since they are tied for head-to-head matches and goal difference in head-to-head matches, only after the 38th round will the better team be known, determined by virtue of the general goal difference in Serie A (currently ahead of Lazio )

  • Juventus and Lazio level on points - Juventus in the Champions League (3-0 and 1-2)

THREE TEAMS ON EQUAL POINTS

With several direct clashes still to be played, it is difficult to draw up the detached ranking: in the coming days the picture will be clearer in this sense.

FIVE TEAMS IN THE CHAMPIONS?

There is also this possibility. By virtue of the presence of Inter, Milan and Napoli in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, if the Nerazzurri or Rossoneri were to stay out of the top four but win the European tournament, they would snatch the pass for the next tournament together with the top four in Serie A.

In this way, Serie A, as happened in the past to other federations, would present itself in the 2023/2024 Champions League groups with five representatives.
